The Dollar Store and Dollar General are two popular stores that most people shop at due to the low cost.
When it comes to being frugal these stores come in handy when you are living on a budget and want to cut cost. However, there are somethings that you should not be buying at these stores.
Sometimes buying cheap is not always the most frugal solution. One of the reasons is buying certain items at poor quality will not save you money but will cost you money in the long run.
Although you can find great products at these stores far more less then let’s say Walmart and Target. However, you need to stay away from buying a few things at these stores but this is my top 5 list.

Towels
I never buy towels from these stores, although they quality has gotten better over the years, they are still a no buy for me and my household. The reason being they don’t last and after a few washes you have to turn around and buy more. This is not saving you money; it’s having you spend more money.
I like to shop at Amazon, T. J. Max, Ross and Marshalls for my towels. Don’t get me wrong Walmart and Target have great towels for good prices. Yet I find that you can catch great sales at these stores throughout the year and get great quality towels for much less.
Bedding
This is another no go for me and my household. Just like towels they are not good quality and also don’t last long.
Walmart and Target have very affordable bedding that last long and very nice looking. If you have kids, I recommend the Walmart Jersey bed sheets for kids. Amazon is another good place to find all things house at affordable prices.
If you love discount stores like I, you can also find good quality at T. J. Max, Ross, Marshalls and Burlington as well.
Cooking Utensils
This is a staple for all households and quality matters. You don’t know how much money is thrown down the drain for buying cheap utensils. This is what I call counter predictive, the utensils at these stores break so easy and last no more than a few days or a month top.
I buy all things kitchen at Amazon, as a couponer I find items that have a coupon when I shop, or I place them on my wish list to buy latter when the price drops or the item goes on sale. You can also find these items on sale or clearance at Walmart and Target.
All though I love discount stores and you can find them on sale you are mostly buying these items one at a time and that can add up.
Dinner ware in bulk
Don’t get me wrong you can find nice mugs and great quality glass ware at the dollar store. Yet if you are trying to buy a set you will end up paying more. The reason, you are paying a dollar per item for a set of 16 pieces you are looking at $16.
You can buy a 16-piece set at Big Lots for as low as $10 that is a $6 difference. You can buy them at Walmart per-piece for as low as 50 cents when they are on clearance. Target also has great clearances on dinner ware as well.
Yes, you can find great prices at your discount stores if you like expensive brands. However, you must remember at these stores you typically find sets for certain items like, set of bowls or set of plates. You don’t really find to many full sets with bowls, plates and mugs all in one.
Curtain, Shower Curtains and Curtain rods
I know what you are thinking, why not they are just hanging and just like the big stores they have black out curtains that are good for saving energy and money on your electric bills.
They are not saving you any money if they are always on the floor or falling from the shower. They don’t help you save money if you have to keep buying them because they tore up in the washing machina.
You want to buy good quality when it comes to these items. Good curtains can last you years if you keep them up. Sturdy curtain rods will stay on your wall for a very long time if not forever.
You can find sales on these items just about any were. Lowes, Homedepot, Walmart, Target, Amazon just to name a few.
Discount stores have a nice size selection as well. You don’t have to break the bank to have good curtains, but you want to have good quality, so you don’t have to keep buying.
